reviews Won't You Come Away by Maggie Boyle

THE CALM and lovely voice of Maggie Boyle has enchanted the folk scene for several years and, on the evidence of this CD, the future holds more of the same. Her voice is tuneful and her diction a model; every word as clear as crystal, setting the mood with her opener, a lovely Moorlough Mary from the excellent Des O'Halloran, she does 12 more songs, mostly Irish. One exception is the brisk polka Dawning, written by Frances Watt.

Paul Downes, Dave Mckeown, Jon Boden, Steve Tilston and Dave Wood add good instrumental support on several tracks. Wood's resonator guitar proves surprisingly effective on The Trees They Do Go High and the Delia Murphy favourite The Spinning Wheel. Boyle also plays flute, whistle and harmonium. A pleasing album demonstrating the singer's depth of talent.
