Peaceful Harbour

by Chris Timson and Anne Gregson

New and traditional songs from England and America: instrumental and vocal, male and female vocals, close harmony, English and Anglo concertinas.

Chris Timson and Anne Gregson have been singing together for many years and are well known as English folk festival and folk club guests. Anne is an accomplished singer and songwriter with a voice both delicate and powerful by turns. Anne won the Sidmouth Folk Festival Singer competition in 1991.

Together Anne and Chris sing a wide range of modern and traditional songs from Britain and America, with a strong emphasis on Annes songs. All the songs are interpreted with a strong English folk style. Both Anne and Chris play concertina - Anne plays English system while Chris plays Anglo. The concertinas are used both for song accompaniment and for Annes unusual arrangements of tunes for both instruments.

Folk On Tap

JPB

This bumper reissue of a previously-released cassette gives us 21 tracks of close-harmony singing, solo flights, and a variety of anglo and English concedina playing, in the midst of which most listeners should find something to whet their appetites.  There is the neo-Peter Bellamy style, with its dropped Hs, and there is the melancholy melodic style of the harmonises, and most styles in between, all crisply re-mastered and brought into the CD age in Doug Baileys new studio at Wherwell in Hampshire.  The album is a credit to all concerned.

Stirrings

Chris Timson & Anne Gregson specialise in close harmony singing and their voices blend well.  There are seven traditional English and American tracks and fourteen contemporary (eleven by Gregson herself) on this cd.  I especially liked the acappella American songs Betty Anne, Another Year and Crawdad Song.  Gregson sets sound lyrics to easily remembered tunes and I can imagine All in Harmony, This Time Again (overdubbed to allow 6 part harmonies) and the title track (two voices, two concertinas, beautifully arranged) becoming club standards.  I could have done without yet another version of The World Turned Upside Down, however this is more than counterbalanced by John Poles excellent Punch & Judy.  Worth a listen.
